Two numbers appear for every instrument here as well, a long figure and a short figure, but they are not the two ends of a distance the way a quote's two prices are. Neither of them is a price anyone deals at, nobody crosses from one to the other, and only the one matching the direction you are holding is ever applied to your position. They are charged on positions that survive the daily rollover, they are set per instrument and per direction, and Wednesday nights are usually charged triple to cover the weekend value date. That makes this the one figure on the site that describes duration rather than an instant, and it is why nothing about how tightly an instrument is quoted tells you what it costs to keep.

What you are debited (−) or credited (+) per standard lot held past the daily rollover, measured on FxPro’s own MT5 Raw+ feed (with the raw points in brackets). A negative number costs you to hold; a positive one pays you. Triple swap is applied on Wednesday night to cover the weekend value date. Carry / yr is the annualised swap yield (swap × 365 ÷ notional at the live price) — a rough guide to what holding the position costs or earns over a year, shown where we have a live price. XAU/USD (Gold)$89.90$497.30$2,059.00−$5.00−$167.00−$788.00

Total net cost to hold one standard lot over time — the spread plus accumulated swap. A positive figure is what it costs you; a negative one means you come out ahead (positive carry). For example, holding EUR/USD long for a month costs about $276, while a EUR/USD short earns about $48. Based on measured spreads and current swaps — rates vary.

Two figures side by side that are not the ends of a gap

On a live quote, two numbers exist at the same instant and the space between them is a real quantity: you meet it when you deal, and it is measured in the units the instrument is quoted in. In the overnight table two numbers also stand side by side, and the space between them is not a quantity anyone meets. No order is filled at either of them, nothing crosses from one to the other, and holding a position does not place you somewhere between them. Each figure is a rate waiting for a position that already has a direction, and on any given night exactly one of them has anything to do with you.

The distinction matters because the two-price habit does not carry over. On a quote, a pair of numbers is one market described from both ends. Here, a pair of numbers is two separate terms of holding published for the same instrument, and reading the second the way you read the first produces a question with no answer: how wide is the swap. It has no width. It has a value, a direction it belongs to and a moment it is applied, and those are the three things worth reading off the row.

An instant has a distance, a night has a rate

Everything the entry side of this site measures exists at a moment. It can be read off a screen and it is a different number a second later. The overnight figure is the opposite kind of number: it does not exist at any instant at all. There is no moment in the session at which you could look at the market and see it, because it is not a property of the market's two prices — it is applied to a position when a boundary is crossed, and between those boundaries it is not there to be observed.

That is also why the two halves of a trade's cost cannot be put on the same scale. The entry side is settled in the second the position exists and is never revisited. The overnight side has no such second: it is re-applied for as long as the position lasts, and how many times that happens is not decided by the market at all. One half is a distance that was crossed; the other is a rate that keeps arriving, per lot, on a schedule.

What the overnight line does not know

The figure applied at the rollover knows the instrument, the direction held and the size in lots. It does not know what price the position was opened at, whether it is ahead or behind, or how far apart the two prices stood at the moment it was opened. A position entered on a wide quote and the same position entered on a narrow one meet exactly the same overnight figure, because the overnight figure was never looking at the quote.

The consequence is that the two halves of the bill never offset each other, in either direction. A costly crossing does not make the nights cheaper and a narrow one does not earn anything back later. They are two independent accounts kept against the same position, settled by different rules at different moments, and a decision to keep a position open is therefore a separate decision from the one that opened it, taken on information that was not available when the order went in.

Frequently asked questions

Are the long and short figures the two ends of a spread?
No. They are two separate rates published for the same instrument. Nobody deals at either of them and nothing crosses from one to the other, so the space between them is not a cost the way the space between two prices is.
If an instrument is quoted tightly, is it cheap to hold overnight?
Not necessarily, and the two do not follow each other. The width of a quote comes from the market for that symbol at that second; the overnight figure comes from the terms of the instrument and the direction held. They are two different lists and are read for two different decisions.
Which of the two figures applies to my position?
Only the one matching the direction you are holding. The other belongs to the opposite direction and is never applied to you at the same time.
Does the overnight charge depend on the price I entered at?
No. It responds to the instrument, the direction and the size in lots, and to the fact that the position was still open at the rollover. Your entry price is not one of its inputs.
Is the swap part of the price my order was filled at?
No. The fill is settled when the order is executed; the overnight figure is booked against the position afterwards, at the daily rollover, and appears as its own entry.
When is nothing charged at all?
When a position does not survive the daily rollover. A trade opened and closed inside the same trading day never reaches the boundary, so no overnight figure is applied to it.
Can overnight interest be avoided entirely?
FxPro offers swap-free (Islamic) accounts, which hold no overnight swap interest for eligible clients. Confirm eligibility with FxPro, and check the exact long and short figure for your instrument in your platform before holding a position overnight.

What traders report

Swing and position traders are the ones who notice FxPro's swaps. Several say overnight charges are lower than on brokers they've used before, and that a swap-free Islamic account avoids swap interest for eligible clients.

FxPro doesn't charge high swap commissions. I've been holding short positions on gbpusd and eurusd since november.
